Slate is a good description of this color--a dark charcoal gray. I was expecting a color closer to a true black. That said, it is sleek and contemporary and sturdy. It has been in the dishwasher, oven, refrigerator, freezer, under the broiler, and under flame for creme br�lée without incident. I even accidentally dropped one on the tile floor and it didn't break! (don't recommend trying that again!) I bought this as a gift for my son, who loves creme br�lée. The color looks great with the dessert, and I think it looks good for a guy's apartment. It looks elegant with white porcelain and china and equally good with contemporary casual dark stoneware. Now that we have them, there are lots more uses than I thought--salad or bread plate with dinner, individual sizes of cakes, puddings, quiches, au gratins, or appetizers like artichoke dip or seared ahi tuna. It holds 6 oz. of liquid. It's surprisingly handy for so many things! I'm going to buy some for myself in a color that better fits my decor.

I love Emile Henry products and expected to love my creme br�lée dishes as much as the other products.The Pros+ Lovely color. I have the dark grey. It's a lovely, understated shade that doesn't compete with the food.+ Handles hot and cold temperatures well. No issues going from hot to cold or vice versa.+ Easy to clean (tossed them in the dishwasher).The Cons-/+ The shape. This is a pro with some cons. I love that they are shallow. I love the balance of crunchy and smooth in creme br�lée. These are wide and shallow, giving you an excellent proportion of caramelized sugar to custard. The downside of the shallowness is that it is very easy to splash water into the dishes from the water bath. If you are very careful, you'll be fine. However, at this height, it is difficult to get water halfway up the sides and keep it out of the dishes as you pull the pan out of the oven. If you don't have very steady hands, you may want to consider a deeper dish.- Stackability. (You are allowed to make up words for reviews. I think.) You can stack these for storage, but they don't nest. As with the comment above, this isn't a deal breaker, but realize that you will have a rather precarious stack of four in your cupboard unless you leave them flat. It may be better to create to stacks of two. I go for the four, but I keep them in a rarely disturbed corner.All in all, if you can live with a couple of minor imperfections, these are lovely. If we could give fractional stars, I would rate these a 3.5.
